Working with people over the years I could observe that people don’t become depressed over the night or even month. There are often years of feeling unhappy, unfulfilled and down. However instead of addressing this issue people live in denial lying to themselves and pretending that everything is fine. Every sign of low mood, anxiety or anger could be suppressed or pushed away by distractions or compulsive behaviours like overeating, over drinking or avoidance behaviours.
How many times you compromised on yourself by not going to the gym, not putting your hand up at the meeting when having a great idea or not addressing your needs in a relationship by being afraid to upset your partner?
You can live this way for a long time but sooner or later there is this one day when putting a fake smile on your face will become an impossible thing and another glass of wine will not be removing anxiety any more. It is our human nature that we often only change when life becomes too painful and lying to yourself and others is no longer an option.
To admit to yourself I am not coping requires a lot of courage and it is often a scary and lonely place. Only if you accept it is OK not to cope, you can make this next step towards yourself, towards more authentic and fulfilling life and ask for help.
